So this deserves a special post all to itself. After all, sunsets (as well as sunrises) are one of the main reasons you come to Bagan.
If you ask your hotel where to go for sunset, they will usually recommend Shwe San Daw Temple. And yes its accessible and easy to find. And the views from there are amazing. But you will be joined by hundreds of other tourists – even coach loads full of them on day trips from Mandalay. Get there early to avoid the rush and be prepared for the steep climb up the steps to the viewing platform (not to mention the climb down!).
If however, you want a more intimate setting to enjoy the sunset, our choice would be North Guni Temple – which is a bit harder to find but definitely worth the extra effort.
We found it through this helpful blog, which we’d found in advance. A few other people must have read it too because there were about 20 other people there when we arrived but we still managed to get a great spot to sit and watch the sun going down over the plains of Bagan. It is still one of the best experiences we’ve had while traveling.
